News & tips for August 2017

News & tips for August 2017 name

Have you noticed that daylight is lasting a bit longer? Even though the weather has been terribly dreary it cheers me up to know that ever so slowly we are inching our way towards spring and that means it’s time to start thinking, often of the wishful kind, about what you want out of your garden.

If it’s a bountiful harvest of beautiful vegetables then now is the time to start sowing trays of the following seeds – tomatoes, capsicums, aubergines and cucumbers. They will need to be kept warm- a sill is fine during the day and a hot water cupboard at night or just somewhere away from a draught.

Don’t forget about potatoes either. Up here in the north island it’s warm enough to put them down. At the moment we have some beautiful Māori potatoes available in 1 kg bags. They really have the most beautiful flavour. Go on be daring and give them a go.
