Description

Caret Down

Contains: A blend of fine fescue varieties, including Chewings Fescue and Creeping Red Fescue.

Made for Shade is our most shade tolerant lawn seed, built for areas that get little to no direct sun, such as under trees, along fence lines, or on the shaded side of the house.

Made for Shade combines several fine fescue varieties, prized for their fine leaf texture and ability to grow in low light. The result is a lush, fine-textured lawn that holds its colour and density in spots where other grass seed struggles, while still coping with sun exposure if conditions change through the day.

Caret Down

Pros

  • A very resilient, sustainable mix of grass species.
  • Very heat and drought tolerant.
  • Naturally dark green.
  • Reduced requirement for irrigation and fertiliser, though it will perform best with both.
  • Excellent in full sun situations.

Cons

  • Needs to be sown in warmer seasons, September to April, or when soil temperatures sit between 12°C and 25°C.
  • Should not be mown below 25mm. It can be mown lower, but this increases maintenance needs such as irrigation and fertiliser.
  • Only moderately shade tolerant, it's suited to areas with sun coverage.

FAQs

Not particularly. Survivor is only moderately shade tolerant and performs best in full sun. For lawns with more shade, our Fine Fescue grass seed range, including Made for Shade, is better fit to cope with lower light.

Sow it in the warmer months, from September through to April, or whenever soil temperatures are between 12°C and 25°C.

Once established, Survivor needs less irrigation and fertiliser than many other lawns, though it performs best when it gets both. A wetting agent can help water move through the soil more effectively during dry spells.

Don't mow below 25mm. It can be cut shorter, but this means more maintenance, including extra irrigation and fertiliser. Browse our Lawn Care range for the right tools.

Each plays a role. Tall Fescue brings heat and drought tolerance with a naturally dark green colour, Ryegrass adds density, wear tolerance, and faster germination, and Kentucky Bluegrass spreads via rhizomes to knit the lawn together and reduce clumping. A seed spreader helps get even coverage across all three at sowing time, and the right lawn fertiliser supports strong establishment.
